Olympic Gold Medalist Yudzuru Hanyū Back in Sendai!
Yudzuru Hanyū won the gold medal in men’s figure skating at the Sochi Olympics. On the 26th, he returned to his hometown Sendai, Miyagi and visited the city and prefectural offices. Sendai Mayor Emiko Okuyama presented a plaque to the champion in honor of his commitment to the city.
More than one thousand fans gathered to catch a glimpse of Hanyū. He responded with his characteristic bright smile to the cheering crowd.
He is the first Japanese male figure skating gold medalist in the history of the Olympic Games. He was actually skating in Sendai when the 2011 earthquake struck. Following the disaster the rink closed and Hanyū was unable to practice for a time.
Those experiences instilled in him a new resolve that led him to this great accomplishment.
